On April 25 and 26, NHL greats will join everyday hockey enthusiasts on the ice in the Corey C. Griffin NHL Alumni Pro-Am Hockey Tournament to benefit the Boston Children’s Hospital Pediatric Head Trauma Unit. This year, the hockey tournament at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough has been named after Corey Griffin, ALS Ice Bucket Challenge co-founder and philanthropist.

Corey Griffin passed away in 2014 at age 27 after a diving accident in Nantucket. Griffin served on the board of the NHL Alumni Pro-Am Tournament and worked with Champions for Children’s, a fundraiser that his father helped found for Boston Children’s Hospital. He was also an accomplished athlete, playing hockey at Thayer Academy, the Taft School, and Babson College. Many of Griffin’s friends and former teammates have formed teams for the Pro-Am in honor of Griffin.

There will be 20 NHL alumni at the tournament including Ray Bourque, Bob Sweeney, Hal Gill, Brian Leetch, and Tom Fergus. One NHL alumnus will play on each amateur team. For the past two years, the tournament has raised $300,000 each year for the Pediatric Head Trauma Unit. This year, the board hopes to raise $525,000.

The fund will enable Boston Children’s Hospital to launch a formal, local, and regional baseline testing program for the unit, expand research efforts by supporting pilot grants in all areas of brain injury research, and create opportunities for new, multidisciplinary research projects to create transformative models of care.

“I am delighted the tournament is now named after Corey Griffin,” said Dr. William Meehan, Director, Micheli Center for Sports Medicine, Division of Sports Medicine, Boston Children’s Hospital. “Throughout his brief adult life, Corey made an enormous contribution to our efforts by investing time, money, and effort. He lent his good name and magnetic personality to our cause. He was my friend. I am happy to see his memory honored in this way.

The NHL Alumni Pro-Am Tournament is absolutely essential to our research.  The money raised has allowed us to generate preliminary data used to garner additional funding through grants, test newly developed medicines designed to prevent brain dysfunction triggered by concussions, determine predictors of extended post-concussion recovery, measure the quality of life after sub-concussive blows, define the role of physical and cognitive activity throughout concussion recovery, and contribute many other important findings.”

On April 24, participants will attend the Draft Party at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge from 6PM – 11PM. The tournament will take place at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough on Saturday, April 25, from 10AM – 4PM and Sunday, April 26, from 9:30AM – 2 PM.
