City Golf Courses Set to Open

Mayor Martin J. Walsh has announced that the City of Boston’s two municipal golf courses – the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park in Dorchester and the George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park – will be fully open for business by Saturday, April 18, weather permitting.

“Our parks and public spaces provide families and children a place to have fun and learn new skills–like golf–while enjoying their time outdoors,” said Mayor Walsh. “We have made some improvements since last season, including an increase in yardage at Franklin Park, and our courses continue to get national recognition while offering an affordable golfing experience in our local neighborhoods. Now, Boston golfers can get ready to get out and play on our award-winning championship courses.”

The William Devine Golf Course is scheduled to open Saturday, April 11, and the George Wright Golf Course the following weekend.  Golfers should call the clubhouses to confirm availability at (617) 265-4084 for Franklin Park and (617) 364-2300 for the George Wright.

Restoration in 2014 at the George Wright included extensive path work on holes 14, 15, 17 and 18 along with improvements such as new bunkers on the third hole and rebuilding of the tee complexes at holes 5 and 7.  Improvements at the William J. Devine included new tee complexes on holes 2, 10, and 11, new bunker complexes on holes 10 and 14, and a brand-new fairway bunker at the tenth hole.  PGA Professional Kevin Frawley also suggests that golfers plan on bringing new drivers for increased yardage at holes 2 and 11.

Golfers can access information on rates, season permits, and tournaments and register for special offers, monthly giveaways, online news, and specials at www.cityofbostongolf.com.  Both courses are owned and operated by the City of Boston, open daily from dawn to dusk, and feature full pro shops, concessions, cart rentals, and lessons for all ages.  For updates, the City’s golf courses can be followed on Twitter @FranklinParkGC and @GeorgeWrightGC.

In 2014 the George Wright was named in Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play” for the fourth consecutive year giving the course its highest ranking to date at #7 having ranked it #10 in 2011, #9 in 2012, and #8 in 2013.  The George Wright is the only municipal course on the state-by-state list for Massachusetts.  In addition, Golfweek ranked the George Wright #27 on its list of best municipal courses nationwide, a jump of 10 spots from 2013, while Golf Digest named the William J. Devine as one of their “Best Places to Play” for the fourth year in a row.  Both courses will be hosting the prestigious MGA Four Ball Championship in May.

The second-oldest public golf course in America and part of the historic Emerald Necklace, the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park in Dorchester offers a pleasant golf experience only minutes from downtown Boston and is open year-round, weather permitting.  Contact PGA Professional Kevin Frawley at (617) 265-4084 for more information or to book a tee time.

Founded in 1938, the 18-hole Donald Ross-designed George Wright Golf Course is a hidden gem in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston.  The course is open seven days a week through November. This par 70 championship course is a challenge to golfers of any level.  PGA Professional Scott Allen is available at (617) 364-2300 to answer any questions.
