Aspiring Aviators Receive Challenge to Build and Pilot Homemade Flying Crafts at 2016 Red Bull Flugtag; Applications Now Being Accepted for the August 20 Extravaganza

BOSTON (February 15, 2016) – Who needs the Longfellow Bridge when you can fly to Cambridge? For the first time in its 25-year history Red Bull Flugtag is coming to Boston and challenging wannabe pilots to push the limits of human flight. Since 1991, Red Bull Flugtag (which translates to “Flying Day” in German for those who don’t sprechen sie Deutsch) has made stops around the world challenging competitors to build and pilot homemade human powered flying machines. The city of Boston is no stranger to making history and 2016 is its year to write itself into the aviation history books.

The application phase launches today and calls for teams of carpenters, athletes, designers, engineers, entertainers, and everyone in-between to turn their dreams of flight into reality. Five-Member teams of aspiring aviators and courageous craftsmen and women can apply for a chance to compete at Red Bull Flugtag 2016 by submitting flying-machine plans to www.RedBullFlugtag.com. The deadline to submit craft designs is May 13th.

Applications will be reviewed and teams will be selected by June 2nd. On August 20th competitors will take the plunge off the 28-foot-high flight deck in front of thousands of roaring fans as they attempt to break the 258-foot distance record.

Red Bull Flugtag 2016 will take place on the majestic Charles River along the Esplanade at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell. “The Department of Conservation and Recreation is excited to partner with Red Bull to host their Flugtag event at the historic DCR Hatch Memorial Shell this year,” said DCR Commissioner Leo Roy. “This one of a kind event will encourage individuals to showcase their creativity in what will be a unique and memorable experience for all who attend. Events such as this expand enjoyment of the Charles River Esplanade to new users.”

When it comes to building a craft, there are no limits on creativity (well, actually, there are a few – as a cardinal rule stay away from copyrighted logos and you should be okay. The Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins are copyrighted logos…but Tom Brady, Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon are not -so game on!). Past applicants have drawn inspiration from food, pop-culture, sports, music, technology, mythology, and heck, even farm animals.

Applying to participate in Red Bull Flugtag is free. Pilots and participants must be 18 or older. For more information, including applications, rules, photos, and video footage from past Red Bull Flugtag events, visit www.RedBullFlugtag.com.
